If you swim on a regular basis, you will lower your risk of getting cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. Swimming also helps develop muscular balance, builds physical endurance and can help the body maintain a healthy weight, according to Bucknell University.

Swimming can also offer mental health perks. Exercising in water is known to help elevate mood in men and women, and it can be particularly helpful for reducing anxiety and depression in people with fibromyalgia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Water-based exercises are also known to improve the mental health of pregnant women and aid developmentally disabled children in bonding with their families.

The low-impact exercise also enables people with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis to get gentle exercise and decrease joint pain and stiffness without causing further injury. Water's cooling effects also help protect the bodies of pregnant women, the elderly and others who have trouble regulating their body temperature.
